Challenger
The Challenger was NASA's 2nd space shuttle(Columbia the 1st). It was built by Rockwell International's Space Transportation Division in Downey,California. It was named after the British Naval Seals research vessel, "HMS Challenger'' that explored the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during the 1800's. Most of the missions' purposes were to put up satellites and do experiments. Its first mission was STS-6 on April 4, 1983. It had nine missions before it exploded 73 seconds after the launch on January 28, 1986. The crew who sacrificed their lives was Francis R. Scobee (Mission Commander), Michael J. Smith (Pilot), Judith A. Resnik (Mission Specialist 1), Ellison S. Onizuka (Mission Specialist 2), Ronald A. McNair (Mission Specialist 3), Gregory B. Jarvis (Payload Specialist 1), and Christa McAuliffe (Payload Specialist 2).
